I got hooked on this author watching the PBS series about his family and their time on the island of Corfu. Durrell's books are laugh out loud funny and educational at the same time. Must reads for anyone with a love of animals. This book deals with the trials and tribulations of collecting a zoo and then finding a place to put it. I fell in love with the Fons - the village leader where the Durrells stayed when collecting and hope there is more of his story in books I haven't yet read. A real winner!

Made me want to travel the world to save animals or just go to the local zoo!I am rather conflicted about zoos...the animals frequently appear to be miserable or at least bored.However, the story was interesting.

A clear and amusing description of a unique experience.

When this, and the others in the series, first came out I devoured them eager for the mysteries of Africa and its birds and animals and remarkable characters. Having now traveled to many of the countries so well described, I have recognised some of the animals and birds Durrell describes and memories of the Bafut of Fon come flooding back. Read and enjoy, then visit if you can.

I am enjoying all of Gerald Durrell's books. I was a bit surprised when Gerry lit a cigarette early on in the book- I thought of young Gerry from the television show!I am going to keep reading all of the Durrell books.

I recommend this to anyone who loves animals. Durrell writes very descriptively and humorously. His knowledge of wildlife is amazing--very entertaining and educational!

The section on tsunamis includes notable events in 1946, 1957, and 2004. The text is generally readable, but some of the explanations come across as vague, particularly the descriptions of the various types of breaking waves' interactions with the shore; these beg for graphic depiction of the phenomena described. This vagueness carries over to the glossary, where an awkwardly worded definition of the atmosphere states that it is thinner than the skin on an apple.
