Nietzsche's Kisses: A NovelBy Lance Olsen

Nietzsche's Kisses is the story of Friedrich Nietzsche's last mad night on earth. Locked in a small room on the top floor of a house in Weimar, the most radical and influential of nineteenth-century German philosophers hovers between dream and wakefulness, memory and hallucination, the first person, second, and third, past and present, reliving his brief love affair with feminist Lou Salome, his stormy association with Richard Wagner, and his conflicted relationship with Lisbeth, his radibly anti-Semitic sister. Here is an authoritative portrait of the Nietzsche we know and the Nietzsche we don't. His titantic ego, suppressed, squelched, and sealed up within him, all but unknown to his acquaintances, creates a maniacal and raging giant inside his own skull that is mysterious and unnerving. Both stylistically and formally innovative, the prose in Nietzsche's Kisses is surprising and rich. The result is a vivid, complex experience of Nietzsche's final hours.

From Publishers Weekly
Olsen (Tonguing the Zeitgeist) delves into the fractured mind of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) hours before his death in a Weimar institution. In the opeining narrative, Nietzsche counts his last hours, doted upon by nurse Alwine and his righteous sister, Lisbeth ("the llama"). Alternately, there are chapters titled by body parts ("Tail," "Bowels") which offer a kind of dreamlike record of Nietzsche's memory, rendered in a stream-of-consciousness second-person. Finally, a more cohesive narrative fills in the details of Nietzsche's life and works backward in time: his travels to Italy, where he fell in love with the unattainable Lou Salome; his waning years as a professor in Turin; his first literary success with The Birth of Tragedy, championed by Richard Wagner before their falling out; finally, his youth in Naumburg and his birth as a pastor's son. Fancifully embroidering into the narrative Nietzsche's themes and aphorisms—"Every sentence is a kiss"—Olsen is a fine and daring writer, equal to the material. (Mar.)

Review
"Nietsche's Kisses is a brilliant book and a book of brilliances, one of which follows the logic of the disintegration of a great mind with poetic grace, profound comedy, and a sense of tragic inevitability. With this novel Lance Olsen moves well beyond mere experimentalism to occupy a ground worthy of the magisterial and manic figure of Nietzsche himself. This is a deeply moving, compelling, intelligent, and utterly human account of the power of mind and the glory of post-history's first and most vulnerable superman."—Michael Joyce

Lance Olsen's Nietzsche's Kisses has a Dionysian soul that the great philosopher would have loved. More importantly, Olsen, and the novel, understand what Nietzsche meant about the scary business of looking into the abyss."—Percival Everett

"Kisses, tears, and laughter. Pride, embarrassment, and humiliation. Lance Olsen's beautiful novel gives us both the 'human, all too human' side of Nietzsche and the dream of lightness and grace that was central to his philosophy, but that is too often forgotten or ignored by his disciples." —Steven Shaviro

Grace: A Memoir, by Grace Coddington

From Booklist

Coddington, creative director of the American Vogue magazine, has much to impart (which she has done before in Grace: 30 Years of Fashion at Vogue, 2002, and The Catwalk Cats, 2008). Fashionistas, rejoice, because not only does she chronicle the life and times of a former model turned editor; she also discusses those whose names appear in any celebrity column—photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Bruce Weber, models like Naomi Campbell, and the Calvin Klein and French couture maîtres. What saves this from becoming a download of the activities of the rich and famous is, first, her amazing candor. We learn, for instance, that marriages don’t agree with her, that her sister Rosemary died of a combination OD–hospital malfeasance issue, and that editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is not as portrayed in The Devil Wears Prada. And, second, her charming and lively pen-and-ink illustrations grace every chapter—and almost every page. Just what you would ask for from a revered behind-the-scenes magazine editor is what you get here. --Barbara Jacobs

I was so sad when the book ended. Grace made me feel like I knew her for ages. She's funny and certainly not afraid to tell it like it is! I read this simultaneously with "A Beautiful Fall" so sometimes the "characters" overlapped. Truly, fact is greater than fiction!

A lot of the world was introduce to Grace Coddington when the movie, The September Issue, came out about how Vogue puts the greatest issue of the year together. But, if you are a Vogue fanatic (like me) and have access to the internet (like me), you know who the woman behind the vision of the fashion editorials at Vogue is. This is her story.I started out by listening to it as she read and had to buy the book. This woman...this ICON of fashion has been everywhere, done everything and met everyone. She is so humble and it comes through in this book. I've been amazed by her fashion editorial spreads for years but to hear how she decides what to do, how to dress the models, how she wants them to stand, etc. is fascinating. Her early years as a model and the things she's been through in her life make her even more down to earth.I so admire her and all she's done. Keep on keeping on, Grace. I hope you have many more years to make your magic at Vogue.

Sweet, charming, funny and engrossing book - by the time I reached the end, I felt like Grace and I had become good friends. This is a fascinating journey into the powerful world of high fashion and its global community of talented, eccentric people. Grace Coddington is an inspiration, especially for baby-boomer women, giving us insights into her aging process and how she's dealt with it in a world where looks are everything. The book has some excellent photos and wonderful illustrations. Coddington's squiggly little ink drawings will wiggle their way into your heart!

Grace's memoir is a little like movies that can't figure out what they want to be and the tone flip flops around, never sticking to one.Coddington clearly has had an amazing life and she shows us a slice of cultural history from the inside and if you are interested in the fashion/modeling world during the early days, you will enjoy the book. However, her personal life is woven in and out of her professional life in a very uneven fashion. She glosses over the most painful parts of her life, but then delves a tiny bit deeper into other parts so you think you're going to get a juicy memoir sometimes, but you never do.Her reporting of the early days is extensive and interesting, as we move into the current day, she gets less detailed and less interesting. We don't anything about how she really felt about almost anything. It's very detached except when she's talking about how she drew her eyeliner and her cats. In fact, her most passionate and bizarre chapter is all about her cats and to what lengths she goes to in order to take care of them. We get more info on the cats than on her infertility or feelings about it.I did enjoy the parts about the early days of modern modeling, but overall it's just ok. I think the rating system is jacked for making three stars "it's ok" and one star "i hated it" so i'm giving it two stars because it's not that great and it left me with a little sour taste in my mouth. If she really didn't want her personal life in the book, then she should have and could have taken it out and focused on the professional side and made it a stronger book.

Grace Coddington is Anna Wintour 's right hand woman. She has managed to garner great press while Her Anna-ness is portrayed as the Editor from Hell. In this memoir it is clear why the two women can and have worked so well together for so many years. They have a symbiosis that has helped elevate the public's interest in all things FASHION. Both have managed to navigate the avenues of female personalities to achieve success. I don't think there could be an Anna without a Grace. Coddington started out as a model and quickly became a darling of the 60's Mod scene. She appears to have controlled her ego and vanity in order to make a successful transition to Creative Director. It is a particular trait of some successful people that you feel you know them (or would like to know them) even though it would never happen. Grace Coddington is one of those people. You applaud her achievements, feel sad for her troubles and end up liking the whole person.A great book for anyone but particularly for women.

Grace: A Memoir was a relaxing, fun read. No tension, no struggles just a wonderful narrative of her life first as a model during the hip 1960's London and Carnaby Street. Then her story evolves into her life as a fashion editor for high fashion magazines. She started in London and then finally ends up at the American Vogue as the second in command to Anna Wintour. Along the way she describes events and photo shoots with lots of famous models, photographers and gives the reader a very intimate personal entry into the world of high fashion, such as the distant photo shots on mountain tops and secluded private beaches around the world. She herself is a very interesting woman and she has a very strong and positive working relationship with Anna Wintour at American Vogue, which you may know is not known for her warm fuzzy personality. But, Grace can handle her without lots of drama and she does. Anyone who is fascinated by fashion and the way it is communicated to the world will find this an absolute wonderful read. It is well over 400 pages but I zipped through it in two settings because of it's ease with the reader. Worth every penny I paid for it. I would love to meet Grace sometime, I know I would like her, actually I do already. She lives with a interesting man in NYC who was a former hairdresser, someone whose path crossed with hers as they did shoots all over the world.

Lovely read... an amazing life... one might say allot of name dropping, but hey, she worked hard and got to meet amazing prople and go to amazing places.... and at a time when life had allot more class, style and mystery then it does now........ amazing Grace, you were blessed... the best to you...
